A Midsummer Night's Dream

as Helena

MiraCosta College

Synopsis

Shakespeare's enchanting comedy weaves together multiple storylines in an Athens forest where fairies meddle in mortal affairs. Young lovers flee to the woods to escape Athenian law, only to become pawns in the fairy king and queen's quarrel, while a group of amateur actors rehearse a play, leading to magical mishaps and mistaken identities.

Impressions

Playing Helena was both heartbreaking and liberating—she's one of Shakespeare's most emotionally vulnerable characters, yet also one of his strongest. Helena's unrequited love for Demetrius and her desperate pursuit of him could easily become pathetic, but the challenge was finding her dignity within her desperation. What I discovered was that Helena's persistence comes from a place of knowing her own worth, even when no one else recognizes it. Her famous "We were two incorporated" speech about her friendship with Hermia required finding the pain of betrayal while maintaining Helena's essential hope and resilience. The magical forest scenes, where both men suddenly love her due to fairy intervention, demanded a complete shift—Helena's disbelief and anger at what she perceives as mockery was crucial to ground the comedy in real emotion. This role taught me that Shakespeare's "comic" characters often carry the deepest wounds, and that humor emerges from character truth rather than external gags. Helena's journey from self-doubt to self-assertion, even in the midst of magical chaos, connected with my own understanding of women who refuse to give up on love despite repeated disappointment.
