Impressions
Playing Millie Michaels gave me the opportunity to explore Neil Simon's gift for finding genuine emotion within broad comedy. Millie's journey from uptight Philadelphia matron to a woman questioning her own assumptions required walking a careful line between caricature and truth. The challenge was making Millie's conservative attitudes understandable rather than simply mockable—she's not the villain of her own story. Her culture clash with California's free-spirited lifestyle forced me to examine how people's identities are shaped by their environments and how threatening it can feel when those foundations are challenged. Working with Simon's dialogue taught me about the rhythm of American comedy writing and how humor emerges from character truth rather than setup-and-punchline structure. Millie's relationship with her husband Marvin and their reactions to their nephew's lifestyle gave me insight into generational and cultural divides. The role required physical comedy skills while maintaining emotional honesty, especially in scenes where Millie's worldview begins to crack. This production deepened my appreciation for Simon's ability to create characters who are funny because they're so recognizably human, not because they're ridiculous.
