There's No Ages Like The Dark Ages

University of California, Irvine · 2015

Synopsis

A comedic satirical look at medieval times, exploring the absurdities and contradictions of the so-called "Dark Ages" through contemporary theatrical lens. The production likely examined how historical periods are romanticized or misunderstood through modern perspectives.

Impressions

Performing in There's No Ages Like The Dark Ages at UCI's CSTA Amphitheater under Kevin Chrisney's direction provided invaluable experience with outdoor theater and large-scale venue performance. The amphitheater setting required significant adjustment in vocal projection and physical choices to reach audiences across the expansive outdoor space. Working with Kevin Chrisney introduced me to another directorial style within UC Irvine's program, expanding my understanding of different creative approaches to theatrical material. The title suggests a comedic or satirical treatment of medieval themes, which required research into historical periods while finding contemporary relevance in ancient conflicts and social structures. The outdoor setting presented unique challenges including weather considerations, natural acoustics, and expanded staging possibilities that enhanced my adaptability as a performer. This production demonstrated my comfort with various venue types and my ability to adjust performance techniques based on space requirements. The experience also provided preparation for potential summer theater work, where outdoor amphitheater performance is common. Working on this production alongside my other UC Irvine work showed my commitment to exploring diverse theatrical material and my willingness to take on challenging performance environments that push beyond traditional theater spaces.
