Impressions
Playing Lenny, the eldest sister and reluctant family caretaker, connected perfectly with my growing expertise in maternal and caretaking roles. Lenny's journey from self-sacrificing spinster to a woman who finally claims her own happiness required finding the strength beneath her apparent weakness. The challenge was making Lenny's transformation believable—she's spent years putting everyone else first, so her moments of self-assertion had to feel earned rather than sudden. Beth Henley's Southern Gothic style demands finding the humor within genuine pain, something that would later inform my approach to other complex female characters. Lenny's relationship with her sisters taught me about sibling dynamics and how family roles become prisons we create for ourselves. The role required balancing Lenny's gentle nature with her hidden backbone, showing that sometimes the quietest characters carry the greatest strength. This production deepened my understanding of how trauma shapes families and how healing requires both confronting the past and choosing to move forward.
