as Mrs. Dashwood

MiraCosta College

Sense & Sensibility

Synopsis

Jane Austen's timeless story of love, loss, and social expectations follows the Dashwood women—Elinor, Marianne, and their mother—as they navigate reduced circumstances and romantic entanglements in Regency England. This theatrical adaptation captures Austen's wit and wisdom while exploring themes of sense versus sensibility, family loyalty, and finding authentic love in a world governed by social conventions.

Impressions

Portraying Mrs. Dashwood at MiraCosta College allowed me to explore Jane Austen's sophisticated character development and the complexities of Regency-era social dynamics. This role required mastering the delicate balance of period-appropriate behavior while revealing the genuine woman beneath social expectations. Mrs. Dashwood's journey from protected wife to independent woman managing reduced circumstances resonated deeply with my interest in characters who must reinvent themselves under pressure. Working with Austen's nuanced writing taught me about the subtlety required for period drama—every gesture, vocal choice, and social interaction must serve both character authenticity and historical accuracy. The role demanded extensive work with Regency social proprieties and proper British dialect, expanding my classical training beyond Shakespeare into other literary periods and styles. Mrs. Dashwood's relationships with Elinor and Marianne provided rich ensemble work, as the mother's guidance and emotional support drive much of the play's dramatic content. This production, alongside my other MiraCosta work, demonstrated my versatility with different types of heightened language and period material. The experience reinforced my growing expertise in maternal characters who must balance strength with vulnerability while navigating challenging circumstances.
