Synopsis
A young girl with shaken faith struggles to come to terms with the loss of her father, exploring themes of grief, belief, and finding meaning in tragedy.
Impressions
This principal role provided valuable experience in carrying a student film's emotional weight while working with a developing director. As the lead character Ruth, I was responsible for anchoring the film's exploration of faith and loss, requiring sustained emotional depth and character consistency throughout the production.
While this production had limitations due to the director's inexperience, the principal role responsibilities taught me important lessons about taking creative leadership when needed and maintaining professional standards regardless of production circumstances. I did not do my due diligence coming in to this project. I had read the script (which had me a little worried) and I knew I wouldn't be getting paid. But, I was really looking for more time in front of the camera being directed by someone who was in college specifically working to become a film director. I also was hoping for some footage I could use to fill out my reel.
What I did not realize is the director was a freshman in his second semester of college. This was his very first directing project. Most of the "film crew" was his family. It was an awkward experience. They were all very nice and I had a nice time visiting with them. However, it was frustrating to me that I was constantly having to remind the director to film more than one take or to make sure he got a scene from multiple angles. He seemed unsure of himself and wanted to move things along quickly. I was fine with taking our time to be sure we had the right shots. I had booked my whole day for this project. So, it surprised me that we were done in four hours.
Many of the problems just came from inexperience. Sadly, there is nothing that I can use for my reel. But, I did have fun playing on camera and chatting with some other actors in the same tier as me. I hope to see the director gain more confidence, get some more training, and produce work that he and all those involved can be proud of.
